Title: HOW TO:  Move CARCare to a New PC

Background:
If you have been using CARCare on one PC and want to place it to a new PC, you will need to install CARCare on your new PC, and then copy your prior database file ("CARCare.db") to your new PC.  This will enable you to continue using your prior data.  The instructions below assume you are using the default database filename ("CARCare.db"), and default folder location.

Ensure that you have already installed the latest release of CARCare onto your new PC.  Do not start CARCare on your new PC.

Do Not try to copy the CARCare software from your prior PC to your new PC.  Doing so will create problems.  You will need to Install it using the download link on the Download page of the CARCareSoftware.com Website.

NOTE: If your database file is stored on a file server, simply install CARCare on your new PC, and then use the
File | Database | Open... menu function to open your database file on your server.  You may skip the remainder of this document.

On Your PRIOR PC:

  1. Start CARCare.

  2. Click Help | About... and note your 16-Digit Registration Key.

  3. Click OK and then close CARCare.

  4. Insert a USB drive.

  5. Start Windows File Explorer.

  6. Copy your database file (CARCare.db) from the C:\Users\Public\CARCare folder, to your USB Drive.

  7. Eject your USB Drive.

On Your NEW PC:

  1. Insert your USB Drive.

  2. Start Windows File Explorer.

  3. Copy your database file from your USB drive, into the C:\Users\Public\CARCare folder.  You will be replacing the 'sample' database file that's already there.

  4. Start CARCare.

  5. Enter your name and your 16-Digit Registration Key.

  6. Click OK.

You should now see the data from your prior PC.

Important:
Each time you close CARCare, it will automatically make a date/time stamped backup copy of your database file.  Therefore, be sure sure to click Options | Preferences... in CARCare to change the Backup Path to an external device, such as a USB Drive or an external hard drive.  If the hard drive in your PC fails, you will be able to rely on the backup copies of your database on the external device.
